This impressive Gothic Revival armchair dates to the early twentieth century, circa 1915–1920, and was acquired from a historic Lutheran church in Bristol, Pennsylvania. The church building itself was constructed in 1917, making it very likely that this chair was originally part of the church’s early interior furnishings.

Crafted from solid hardwood and built with exceptional weight and durability, the chair reflects the Gothic architectural influence commonly used in American church interiors during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

The tall back features a molded cathedral arch with carved tracery detail reminiscent of Gothic church windows. Massive scroll arms terminate in rounded knuckles and flow into thick square legs, giving the chair a strong architectural presence. Beneath the seat, a gracefully arched stretcher provides additional structural strength while echoing the pointed arches found in Gothic architecture.

Chairs of this form were commonly used in church vestries, council rooms, rectories, and clergy offices, where durable and dignified seating was required. The scale and heavy construction of this example give it a commanding presence while remaining comfortable for everyday use.

The wood has aged to a rich warm tone and retains its original character with honest signs of age and use. Today the chair works beautifully as an accent chair in a historic interior, study, library, or entry hall.

A striking piece of early twentieth-century Gothic Revival furniture with authentic ecclesiastical provenance.
