Antique Painted Side Chair with Metal Spindles & Folk Repair, c. 1900

Some antiques survive because they were carefully preserved. Others survive because someone simply refused to give up on them.

This wonderfully worn antique side chair retains an old blue painted surface with a contrasting green plank seat and decades of honest wear. The shaped wooden crest is decorated with a pressed foliate design, while the center of the back is fitted with five unusual turned-form metal spindles, an especially interesting detail that gives the chair a distinctive vernacular character.

The surface tells much of the story. Paint loss, scratches, exposed wood, old repairs, and layered wear show a chair that was used rather than merely displayed.

One detail in particular deserved to remain untouched. At some point, someone corrected a wobble by fitting a small medicine bottle cap beneath one leg, cushioned with part of a Band-Aid. It is humble, practical, and wonderfully human. Rather than remove it, I chose to preserve it as part of the chair’s history.

This is not a chair pretending to be new. Its beauty is found in the evidence that it was worth keeping.

Condition

Good antique condition with substantial age-related wear throughout.

The painted surface shows extensive chipping, scratches, abrasions, exposed wood, and general wear consistent with long use. The green seat likewise shows considerable surface wear.

One leg retains an old improvised leveling repair consisting of a medicine bottle cap and cushioning material from a Band-Aid. This repair has intentionally been left in place as part of the chair’s history and character.

Care Instructions

Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth.

Avoid commercial furniture polish, harsh cleaners, excessive moisture, or aggressive scrubbing, as these may disturb the remaining historic painted surface.

Because the aged finish and accumulated wear are an important part of this chair’s character, preservation rather than refinishing is recommended.

Biblical Reflection

There is something beautiful about an object that was repaired rather than discarded.

Someone once looked at this old chair, saw that it wobbled, and used what they had to keep it going. The repair was hardly elegant, but it served its purpose. Years later, that little medicine cap and Band-Aid have become part of the chair’s story.

We often look for value in perfection, yet Scripture repeatedly reminds us that weakness does not make something worthless. Sometimes the worn, bruised, and imperfect things are precisely the ones most deserving of care.
