This beautifully carved oak armchair features bold Edwardian lion heads and classic late-Victorian design lines. Hand-crafted between approximately 1905 and 1915, it represents a transitional period in furniture design when the heavy ornament of the Victorian era began to give way to the more refined styling of the Edwardian period.

The carved lion heads at the arm terminals are the defining feature of this chair. Lions symbolized strength, dignity, and authority, making this style especially popular for gentlemen’s chairs and library seating during the early 20th century. The turned legs, shaped seat, and solid oak construction reflect quality craftsmanship from a time when furniture was built to last for generations.

This piece has been gently preserved rather than refinished. Its surface has been cleaned and protected using museum-grade Renaissance microcrystalline wax to maintain the warm patina earned through more than 100 years of careful use. The result is a chair that remains sturdy, character-rich, and true to its history.

This chair would be at home in an antique-inspired living space, office, study, or reading corner. It also serves as an excellent teaching example for collectors who are learning to identify Edwardian influence in furniture design.

A Thought for the Heart

Lions have long symbolized strength, courage, and kingship. Scripture reminds us that true strength is found not in appearances, but in the One who watches over us.

Proverbs 28:1 (KJV)
“The wicked flee when no man pursueth: but the righteous are bold as a lion.”

May this piece be both a beautiful furnishing and a quiet reminder that courage begins with faith.
